It started off as a bit of fun. I signed up for a personal colour analysis session hosted by one of my favourite local beauty brands. The fee was minimal, and I got it back through shopping vouchers anyway. I needed to buy skincare, so I figured, why not?
The analysis revealed that I’m apparently warm spring. And honestly… I was surprised. For years, I’d been reaching for autumn shades; deep browns, burnt orange, olive green. Now I was being told I’d look better in pastels, peachy tones, and soft blues. Suddenly, I found myself staring at my wardrobe thinking, “Wait, does none of this suit me?”
It might sound silly, but I started doubting the makeup I owned, the clothes I wore, and even the colours that used to make me feel good. It was like, “If it’s not part of my colour palette, should I even be wearing it?”
People often say that personal colour analysis helps you save money, since you’ll supposedly stop buying things that don’t suit you. But in my case? It made me spend more. I ended up buying a new cushion compact, a few spring-toned lip tints, and even considered replacing my usual blusher, all in shades the consultant said would suit me best.
To be fair, the session itself was fun. The consultant was lovely, and there was no pressure. But after that, I received a little booklet full of product suggestions... yep, all from their brand! I get it, it’s marketing. But suddenly, products I already owned started to feel… wrong. Like they didn’t belong.
I’ve seen people on TikTok say that this trend is proof that anything can be capitalised on. And after experiencing it myself, I kind of get it.
It’s not that I regret going, but since then, I’ve become more selective. I find myself only wanting to wear clothes that are supposedly “right” for me. When before, I never thought twice.
Maybe we don’t always need to be “on palette”. Maybe wearing what makes you feel good is more than enough. Maybe.
